Summer School"Design and Synthesis of Quantum Materials"
of the IMPRS & MPI-UBC-UTokyo CenterStuttgart, September 28th - October 2nd, 2020
Scope Quantum phenomena offer great opportunities for applications in information and clean energy technology, including the realization of quantum computers and novel solar cells. The rational design and synthesis of materials that host such phenomena are therefore at the forefront of solid state research. The aim of this Summer School is to bring interdisciplinary research experts in the field of quantum materials together with young researchers at the Max Plank Institute, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Tokyo. more
*Canceled*Workshop: Chaos Dynamics and Thermalization in Interacting Quantum Systems
We regret to inform you that the worshop "Chaos Dynamics and Thermalization in Interacting Quantum Systems" planned for May 7-9, 2020 in Vancouver has been *canceled* due to the threat posed by the global pandemic. We are hoping to possibly run a similar event at a future date once the situation is back to normal, please stay tuned.

Date: May 7-9, 2020
Location: Vancouver Campus, University of British Columbia, Canada
Organizers: E. Altman (UC Berkeley), M. Franz (UBC)
This workshop will focus on quantum many-body dynamical phenomena that are ubiquitous in nature, yet not very well understood. This includes the suite phenomena that lead to thermalization in isolated quantum systems, quantum chaotic behaviour and non-equilibrium dynamics in driven systems. Great strides have been made recently in answering some of the key questions in the field, including the seminal problem of how and when quantum systems thermalize, what is the role of chaos and integrability and when does thermalization fail. The workshop will bring these new developments into focus and allow the wider community to participate and benefit from these discussions. For the speaker list and more information about the workshop, please visit our event page. We invite you to register online to attend this workshop. Please also feel free to share this information with people you know, who may be interested in and benefit from participating in this workshop.
If you have any questions regarding registration of the workshop, please don’t hesitate to contact Tracy Xu at tracy.xu@ubc.ca.   more

Winter school and Brainstorming Workshop on "Ultrafast Quantum Control of Matter" 2017, Vancouver
The scope of this brainstorming workshop (Dec 11 - Dec 15, 2017) is to bring together a selected number of colleagues who work in the field of coherent control of matter. The ultimate goal is to merge the knowledge coming from coherent optical control of atoms and molecules to the emerging field of quantum control in solids, correlated materials and topological matter.

Spin-orbit coupling and relativistic quantum materials
Coupling between motional and spin degrees of freedom of electrons in solids is a genuinely relativistic effect, which leads to a plethora of interesting phenomena and underlies the physics of some of the most exciting quantum materials discovered in recent decades. This includes topological insulators and superconductors, Weyl and Dirac semimetals, and various strongly correlated complex oxides, such as iridates and ruthenates.
In a series of pedagogical lectures the school will introduce the general concept of spin-orbit coupling in atoms and in solids and then will proceed to describe various classes of materials where these effects are strongly manifested. The school is aimed at graduate students and postdocs working in experiment and theory who possess basic background in condensed matter physics.
Summer school 2014, Stuttgart
"Superconductivity and Magnetism at the Nanoscale", June 30 - July 3, 2014. Superconductivity and magnetism are often seen as incompatible phenomena as magnetism easily destroys superconductivity. However, in some instances a coexistence with intriguing properties may ensue when, for example, the dimensions of the superconductor are reduced or the magnetic moments are very localized. Both superconductivity and magnetism are fascinating subjects on their own and they are far from being understood. In combination, they have revealed an even stranger world of effects, of which it seems that we have only scratched the surface so far. This summer school will cover the topics superconductivity and magnetism as well as the combination of the two, how they can coexist in materials and how they interact to produce new particles, such as the Majorana fermion. more
