Sir Martin Wood Prize lecture

On 10 June, the MPI FKF hosted a lecture in celebration of the recipient of the 2025 'Sir Martin Wood Prize', Professor Takamasa Sakai.

Professor Sakai received the prize for his pioneering work on “Precision Gel Science”: groundbreaking contributions to the science of hydrogels and soft materials.

The award, which honors outstanding young researchers in Japan under the age of 45, celebrates achievements in condensed matter science, materials science, chemistry, and related fields while promoting scientific exchange between Japan and the United Kingdom.

Takamasa Sakai became associate professor in 2015 and was appointed professor in the department of Bioengineering in 2020. Since 2021, he has also served as professor in the department of Chemistry and Biotechnology at the University of Tokyo.

Beyond academia, he has contributed to technology transfer and innovation as director and Chief Technology Officer of Gellyk, Inc. since 2019.

At the heart of Takamasa Sakai’s work are hydrogels—soft materials composed of three-dimensional polymer networks swollen with water. Hydrogels are ubiquitous in everyday life, appearing in products ranging from soft contact lenses to food products. Because their structure closely resembles that of biological tissues, they have long attracted interest as model systems for understanding living matter and as promising materials for medical applications.

Despite decades of research, a major obstacle has hindered progress in gel science. The internal polymer networks of conventional gels are highly heterogeneous, and these irregularities are difficult to visualize or quantify, even with the most advanced microscopy techniques. As a result, theories describing gel behavior often remained approximations that could not be rigorously tested.

Addressing this problem led to Sakai’s idea of the development of the “Tetra Gel”: a new class of structurally homogeneous hydrogels.

The impact of this innovation has been profound. Sakai and his collaborators established quantitative relationships between gel structure and its physical properties. This approach gave rise to what he calls “Precision Gel Science,” a framework that allows gels to be studied with a level of rigor previously unattainable.

At the same time, Sakai has successfully translated fundamental science into practical applications. Because the structure-property relationships of Tetra Gels are now quantitatively understood, new materials can be designed and prototyped remarkably quickly, with important applications in the field of medicine.

Professor Takamasa Sakai has reshaped the field of gel science. His receipt of the 2025 Sir Martin Wood Prize recognizes not only his remarkable scientific achievements but also the broad impact of his work on both fundamental research and future biomedical technologies.
