1. Before Applying

1.1  What kind of academic degree do I need to apply
You should hold a bachelor's degree in chemistry, physics or materials science

1.2 I haven't completed my current degree yet, but intend to do so within the next few months. Can I already apply?
You can already submit your application before you have completed your degree. It is important, however, that you will complete your BSc degree before joining our program.

1.3 I have already a MSc degree. Can I apply?
No, you are not eligible for our program.

1.4 I am already a PhD student / have a PhD title. Can I apply?
No, you are not eligible for our program.

1.5 I don't have a background in Physics, Chemistry or Material Sciences. Can I also apply?
Joining our program with a different background is not possible.

1.6 Whom should I list as a referee in my application?
We recommend that you choose a senior scientist, e.g. your university professor / the supervisor of your BSc thesis would be a good choice.

1.7 I am not a national of one of LDC country. Am I still eligible to apply?
Yes, you are eligible to apply.


2. Applying Process

2.1 How can I apply?
To apply for the COMP@SS Internship Program, you have to send a single PDF file to compass@..

2.2 When do I need to apply?
The next application round will start in September 2024. Concerning the deadline please check our website.
A complete application comprising all required documentation should be submitted at the same time as a single PDF file.
Incomplete applications or completed applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.

2.3 What are the requirements to apply?
Please send your application as single pdf file named NAME_Firstname.pdf . The pdf file has to include following documents listed below:

  • Motivation statement (maximum one page). Please clearly discuss your decision-making process to apply to the COMP@SS internship program. Please give the project number/s to which you are applying and explain why.
  • A comprehensive curriculum vitae (CV) of maximum two pages in length. 
  • Official Bachelor's transcript of records, and if available course descriptions detailing the content of the courses you have mastered.
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate, if already available.
  • Proof of enrollment in master studies
  • Contact information of one referee (official email address and website) who can attest to your academic, professional, and/or research abilities in the context of your interest in our internship program
  • A proof of English proficiency either a statement that a large part university education was in English or
    • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): 6.5
    • (Internet-based) English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): 80

3. Financial Support

3.1 What kind of financial support is offered?

  • Interns will receive a monthly salary up to 1200€. With this salary will allow you to cover your living expenses, including housing and health insurance.
  • In addition, interns will receive compensation for their travel costs.

3.2 Are visa expences covered?
No, expenses for visa matters (visa application fee, trips to the embassy, etc.) cannot be reimbursed.


4. General Information

4.1 Where will students live during the duration of the program?
Since finding a suitable place can be difficult, we offer all COMP@SS interns accommodation in the guest house of the MPI FKF.

4.2 Do I have to be able to speak German?
The program and working language at MPI FKF is in English.
