In memory of Peter Fulde

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Peter Fulde, director at our institute from 1973-93, focused on condensed matter physics and superconductivity. He passed away in the night of April 11, 2024, shortly after his 88th birthday.

Peter Fulde was born in 1936 in Breslau. He joined the MPI for Solid State Research in 1973, where he established a theory department working on strongly correlated electron systems. This field gained enormous importance after the discovery of high temperature superconductivity in 1986.
Peter Fulde is well known for his discovery of the Fulde-Ferrell phase, an exotic superconducting state of matter. In Stuttgart he developed, in particular, variational wave functions for correlated electrons in solids.
In 1993 Peter Fulde became Founding Director of the new Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems in Dresden. With its unique workshop program this institute has become famous due to its stimulating environment for colleagues from all over the world.

We will gratefully remember Peter Fulde as an outstanding scientist, dedicated scientific organizer, and true gentleman.
