Ultrathin QMs offer exclusive access to their emergent properties because they are sensitive to material surfaces and interfaces. Due to the strong confinement of electrons in reduced dimensions, they can be easily manipulated by strain, epitaxial design, electric fields, and control of charge carrier density. Nevertheless, the applications of thin films, such as ultrathin high-Tc films, are limited due to insufficient quality and have fundamental limitations that prevent full manipulation and integration and, even in specific cases, cannot reach the properties of single crystals of the same compounds. Our research aims not only to achieve the highest quality epitaxial films through a feedback loop with STEM characterization but also to probe the local structural and electronic properties with the highest resolution STEM-HAADF, STEM-ABF imaging, and STEM-EELS to unravel the underlying physics at the atomic scale.
