Day of Exchange and Inspiration: The First Institute Colloquium at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research

October 20, 2025

From science to sports – a new in-house event fostered collaboration, dialogue, and community spirit across all departments.

On October 15, 2025, the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research (MPI-FKF) hosted its first Institute Colloquium, a new yearly event designed to bring together researchers from all departments and facilities under one roof. The goal: to provide a comprehensive overview of the diverse research activities at the Institute, encourage exchange between groups, and strengthen the sense of community.

The day began with opening remarks by Prof. Bernhard Keimer, setting the tone for an event that combined scientific excellence with collegial interaction. Over the course of the day, 15 presentations showcased the breadth of research at MPI-FKF — from the synthesis and characterization of new materials to cutting-edge spectroscopy, quantum many-body theory, and nanoscale science.

Speakers represented all career stages, from PhD students and postdocs to research group leaders and directors, highlighting the collaborative spirit that defines the Institute. Talks covered a wide range of topics, such as quantum materials, organic electronics, catalysis, electron microscopy, and quantum dynamics — offering insights into both fundamental physics and applied research.

Following the talks, the poster session in the atrium featured more than 40 posters, sparking vivid discussions and new connections among researchers. The lively atmosphere continued throughout lunch and coffee breaks, where colleagues exchanged ideas across departmental boundaries.

Recognizing that communication also thrives beyond the lecture hall, the Institute organized a relaxed evening program with dinner, games, and informal networking. A ping-pong table, darts, and foosball brought out the playful side of the participants — and, in some cases, a surprisingly competitive spirit. Despite a long day of science, many stayed well into the evening, enjoying the opportunity to connect on a more personal level.

The inaugural Institute Colloquium was a resounding success, demonstrating that strong science and strong community go hand in hand. It not only provided a panoramic view of the Institute’s research landscape but also reinforced the shared enthusiasm that drives discovery at MPI-FKF. With its combination of science, dialogue, and fun, the event is set to become a valued annual tradition.
