FAQ – Max Planck Science Policy Winter School 2026

  • Who can apply?
    • The Winter School is open to MPG Employees but targeted towards PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers from all disciplines within the Max Planck Society. Applicants should have a strong interest in science policy, communication, and engagement beyond their own research field.
    • Employees of MPG partner institutes are not elligible.
    • Guest contracts do not count as employment.
  • I have not received a confirmation email after registration.
    • If you have reached the final page of the limesurvey, we have received your application. Not automatic email is sent out.
  • Do I need prior knowledge of science policy?
    • No prior expertise in science policy is required. The program is designed to provide both an introduction and in-depth perspectives. A curiosity about how science and politics interact is what matters most.
  • When and where will the Winter School take place?
    • The program will be held from 25–30 January 2026 at the Harnack Haus in Berlin.
  • How can I apply?
    • Applications can be submitted via the online application form, which will be available from 15 September to 18 October 2025. Links and detailed instructions will be published on the website.
  • What does participation cost?
    • There is a registration fee of 150€. This fee covers accommodation, meals, and refreshments at the Harnack Haus for the duration of the program.
  • What other costs are involved?
    • Participants are responsible for covering their travel expenses to and from Berlin. We encourage you to check with your home institute regarding support for professional training travel.
  • Is financial support for travel available?
    • At present, travel costs cannot be reimbursed by the organizers. We recommend contacting your institute or department to inquire about funding opportunities.
  • What language will the program be held in?
    • The working language of the Winter School is English. Participants should feel comfortable engaging in discussions and workshops in English.
  • How many participants will be selected?
    • The Winter School is limited to 50 participants to ensure an interactive and collaborative atmosphere.
  • What is the selection process?
    • Participants will be chosen based on their applications, with attention to motivation, disciplinary diversity, and balance across institutes. The aim is to create a group that reflects the breadth of the Max Planck Society. Applications will be anonymized.
  • What does the program include?
    • The week-long program combines lectures, workshops, site visits to political institutions in Berlin, and practical training sessions. Topics include science for policy, policy for science, science diplomacy, and strategies for effective science communication.
  • Do I receive a certificate of participation?
    • Yes, all participants will receive a certificate confirming their participation in the Winter School.
  • I have accessibility or dietary requirements. Can these be accommodated?
    • Yes. Please let us know of any special needs when applying, and we will do our best to ensure the program is accessible and inclusive for all participants.
  • Who is organizing the Winter School?
    • The school is a grass roots initiative organized by a team of doctoral researchers from the Max Planck Institutes for Solid State Research (MPI-FKF) and Intelligent Systems (MPI-IS), with support from both isntitutes, the Max Planck Society and various funding agencies.
