As the channel length of organic thin-film transistors (TFTs) is reduced in order to improve the dynamic TFT performance, the total resistance and hence the effective field-effect mobility and the transconductance of the TFTs become more and more limited by the contact resistance, rather than by the channel resistance.

Using the transmission line method (TLM) we have measured and analyzed the contact resistance of organic transistors based on various semiconductors, such as pentacene, DNTT, C10-DNTT, DPh-DNTT and NTCDI-Cl2-(CH3C3F7)2, and investigated how it affects the dynamic performance of the TFTs and how it can be effectively alleviated.

The smallest channel-width-normalized contact resistance we have so far been able to measure is 10 Ωcm.
